Lighting

Please meet Murphy, he is not a huge fan of the camera and gets nervous when I take his picture, but I do it all the time anyway.  I decided to try and light him in a few different ways for these pictures.

In this one I just used my flash and the room was lit with two overhead pot lights that were not directly above him.  I like the attention that it calls to his paws and eyes they look very bright.

In this picture I turned the flash off and just used the lighting in the room, his color looks more warm and his features are less defined.

In this picture I put a small light directly above Murphy (you can see the cord).  This makes his fur look brighter and his features are well defined.  I like how shiny his coat looks compared to the other photos.

  1. I like the picture with the flash off. I love the dark patches on his body and nose. I personally like this look better than the shiny coated look, but it's personal preference. He looks cuddly! Awesome subject!

  3. I enjoy the second and third pictures! You really did a nice job of showing the contrast that light changes can make! You have a beautiful dog also!

  4. Besides the fact that Murphy looks annoyed, I think you really captured the assignment. It is tricky trying to get the proper photograph. I really like the last photo. It really captured the contours of his fur and its just great lighting.

  5. I have to agree, the second photo is my favorite. Even though he may look annoyed, he looks soft and inviting enough to hug. This is a very nice example of how light can really impact our shots.

  6. As a fellow dog owner I know the struggle of trying taking pictures of pets! Great job though! The second picture is stunning and the color and different shades of light makes it a really cool photo!

  7. The second "darker" photo is my favorite. I like the color ratio in the photo and your dog doesn't look too impressed :)

  8. I have to agree with the rest, that the second photo really does a great job of showing how "set up" light can make a difference. There are great shadows and highlights that help to define the subject better than a flash. Even though you use the "set up" light with the flash, the flash tends to flatten out the subject. especially when it is attached to the camera. If you can get a wireless remote flash, then you can really make a splash with your photography by placing the flash off to the side, which can create a dramatic effect with your lighting.
